This next leg of your pilgrimage via the Kyirong route involves a captivating drive from the Nepal-China border town of Timure to Kyirong, a gateway town nestled amidst the vast Tibetan plateau.

The verdant hills and lush farmlands of Nepal give way to the vast expanse of the Tibetan plateau. As you leave Kyirong behind, your pilgrimage takes a dramatic turn towards the vast expanse of the Tibetan plateau. Saga, a small town nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, serves as your gateway to this awe-inspiring landscape, crossing high passes we reach this crucial acclimatization stop before reaching the sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.
Saga, aptly nicknamed “the Happy Land,” offers a serene atmosphere and breathtaking scenery. At an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters, it’s the perfect place to adjust to the high altitude and prepare for the physically demanding journey ahead.
Stepping outside your hotel, you’ll be greeted by the vastness of the Tibetan plateau. Rolling grasslands stretch for miles, dotted with nomadic yak herder settlements and snow-capped peaks like Ganeshmala, Langtang, and Shishapangma that pierce the clear blue sky. This dramatic shift in landscape serves as a powerful reminder of the immense power and beauty of the natural world.

After breakfast, traversing the vast Tibetan plateau, you finally arrive at the crown jewel of your pilgrimage – the celestial Lake Manasarovar. For millennia, Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon have revered this sacred lake as a source of purification and a gateway to enlightenment. Prepare to spend a day immersed in the serenity and spiritual significance of this breathtaking location.
Today, you will also have the first Darshan of holy Mt. Kailash from Horchu Pass. You will perform the Parikrama of Lake Mansarovar by tourist bus. A tradition followed by pilgrims for centuries. The 43-kilometer journey offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and allows you to connect with the spiritual energy of this sacred place. Dotted around the lake are several ancient monasteries, each with its unique history and significance. Chiu Gompa, the oldest monastery on the lakeshore, is believed to have been built by Guru Padmasambhava himself. Stay overnight in a guesthouse at the bank of Lake Manasarovar.
Ascend 112m, distance 370 km, driving duration 5 hours
Lake Manasarovar, nestled at an altitude of over 4,500 meters, shimmers like a turquoise jewel against the backdrop of the majestic Kailash. As you approach the lakeshore, a sense of peace and tranquility washes over you. The crystal-clear waters are believed to possess mystical healing properties, and a dip in the lake is considered a sacred act by followers of all four religions.
In the morning you will perform Havan and Puja and take a holy ritual dip in the Mansarovar Lake. Hindus revere the lake as Manas Sarovar, the “Lake of Mind,” believing the dip washes away sins and grants liberation. Buddhists view it as the “Lake of Perfect Joy,” and Jains consider it a source of immense spiritual merit. As you enter the crystal-clear waters, feel the weight of your journey lift and a sense of renewal wash over you.
After the purifying bath, embark on a short drive to Tirthapuri, also known as Adi Badrinath. This ancient pilgrimage site holds significance for Hindus, believed to be where Lord Shiva resided during his earthly sojourn. Explore the serene temple complex and soak in the rich history of this sacred location, situated at the bank of the Sutlej River, explore its major attractions, perform a parikrama, and drive to Darchen- the base camp of Kailash or back to Mansarovar.

Nestled at an altitude of 4,700 meters, Darchen offers a unique blend of Tibetan culture and spiritual significance. Here, you’ll meet fellow pilgrims from all walks of life, united by their desire to connect with this sacred mountain.
As you settle into your accommodations in Darchen, a sense of anticipation builds. With a renewed sense of purpose and a heart brimming with peace, you’ll be prepared to face the final challenge – the circumambulation of Mount Kailash itself.

Ascend 200m, distance 8 km by bus & 12 km trek, total 20km
The anticipation has reached a fever pitch. You stand at the threshold of the most profound experience of your pilgrimage – the circumambulation (parikrama) of Mount Kailash.
The day begins with a short drive to Tharboche, also known as Yamadwar, the “Gateway of Death.” This point holds immense significance for Hindus and Buddhists alike. Hindus believe it signifies the shedding of the ego and worldly attachments before encountering the divine presence of Mount Kailash. Buddhists consider it the symbolic passing from the cycle of rebirth. Here, you’ll perform traditional rituals to appease the guardian deities of the mountain.
From Tharboche, the trek to Diraphuk commences. The initial path winds through a scenic valley, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As you ascend, the mighty form of Mount Kailash begins to dominate the horizon, its snow-capped peak piercing the clear blue sky.
After a few hours of moderate trekking, you’ll reach Diraphuk, a small settlement nestled at the foot of the north face of Mount Kailash. Here, you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring sight – a breathtakingly close view of the mountain’s majestic peak. For Hindus, this is Darshana, a glimpse of the divine abode of Lord Shiva. For Buddhists, it’s a chance to connect with the celestial paradise of Demchog Kanpoche. Jain pilgrims revere this location as the place where their first Tirthankar attained enlightenment. Spend the night in a guesthouse at Diraphuk, basking in the serenity of the location and the profound experience of the day.
Ascend 400m, 10km up and down trek
After breakfast, trek to Kailash Glacier for Charan Sparsha. Chance for closest Darshan of Mt. Kailash. Trek back to Diraphuk, overnight in the same guesthouse.
As the morning light bathes Mount Kailash in a golden glow, a profound sense of purpose washes over you. Today is the day for Charan Sparsha, a sacred ritual where you’ll touch the base of the mountain, a cherished aspiration for pilgrims of all faiths on the Kailash parikrama. After breakfast, Embark on a challenging yet rewarding trek to the Kailash Glacier, a chance to connect with the divine essence of this revered mountain.
The path winds through a stark yet beautiful landscape, dotted with glacial moraines and offering stunning panoramic views.
After a few hours of trekking, you’ll reach the awe-inspiring sight of the Kailash Glacier. Here, you’ll perform the sacred ritual of Charan Sparsha. Hindus believe it signifies touching the feet of Lord Shiva, receiving his blessings, and washing away sins. Buddhists view it as connecting with the celestial abode of Demchog Kanpoche. Jains regard it as a chance to seek blessings from the first Tirthankar.
After performing Charan Sparsha, you’ll embark on the return trek to Diraphuk. While the journey back is physically demanding, the memory of your divine encounter with Mount Kailash fuels your steps. Back at the guesthouse, you’ll relive the experience, sharing stories and emotions with fellow pilgrims.
Ascend 800 m and descend 850m, a distance of 20 km by trek
Today is a pivotal day in your Kailash parikrama, a test of both physical and spiritual resilience. You embark early in the morning on the most challenging leg of the journey, crossing the mighty Dolma La pass, a gateway to breathtaking landscapes and profound spiritual experiences. Prepare to push your limits and be rewarded with stunning vistas and a chance to connect with the sacred essence of Mount Kailash.
The initial trek starts with a gradual ascent, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape as the sun paints the sky with vibrant hues. As you ascend, the air thins and the physical demands become more significant. However, the breathtaking panoramas and the unwavering faith of countless pilgrims who have walked this path before you keep you going.
After a challenging yet rewarding five-hour trek, you reach the summit of Dolma La. Here, the world unfolds before you in a breathtaking tapestry. Snow-capped peaks pierce the clear blue sky, and the vast expanse of the Tibetan plateau stretches as far as the eye can see. For Hindus, this is the gateway to paradise, the abode of Lord Shiva. Buddhists view it as a symbolic crossing from the earthly realm to the celestial pure land. Jains consider it a place of immense spiritual merit. Take a moment to soak in the view, offer prayers, and celebrate your accomplishment.
From Dolma La, the path descends towards Zuthulphuk Gompa, a serene monastery nestled at an altitude of 4,850 meters. Along the way, you’ll encounter Gauri Kunda, a sacred lake revered by Hindus as the embodiment of Parvati, Lord Shiva’s consort. Jains consider it a place of immense spiritual significance. Catching your breath by the lake and offering prayers provides a moment of respite before continuing your descent. Finally, reach Zuthulphuk Gompa, where you will stay overnight in a guesthouse.

Descend 350m, Darchen to Saga: distance 430 km, driving duration 7 hours
Trek to Tangsar and drive to Darchen, where you will have lunch. And then, we will make the return journey to Saga. Stay overnight in a hotel.
With a heart brimming with profound experiences and a renewed sense of spiritual connection, you embark on the final leg of your Kailash parikrama. The journey concludes at Tangsar, marking the completion of your circumambulation of Mount Kailash carrying the indelible memories of your pilgrimage. After a restful night at Zuthulphuk Gompa and breakfast, you set off on the final stretch of the trek towards Tangsar. The path descends gradually, offering a final glimpse of the majestic Mount Kailash from a different perspective.
After a few hours of trekking, you arrive at Tangsar, a small settlement marking the official end of your parikrama journey. This is a moment of great accomplishment and a chance to celebrate your spiritual achievement. Offer your final prayers and absorb the unique atmosphere of this sacred location.
A short drive from Tangsar takes you back to Darchen, the base camp for the Kailash parikrama. Here, you can enjoy a well-deserved lunch and savor the camaraderie with fellow pilgrims who have shared this transformative experience.
Bidding farewell to Darchen, you embark on a scenic drive back to Saga. While the parikrama has come to an end, the memories and spiritual insights gained will stay with you forever. Carrying the blessings of this sacred mountain, you embark on the next chapter of your life, forever transformed by the experience.
Descend 3040m, distance 230 km, driving duration 7-8 hours
After a hearty breakfast in Saga, you bid farewell to the town. The journey back to Nepal offers a unique opportunity to witness the dramatic change in landscape. As you depart Saga, the vast expanse of the Tibetan plateau gradually gives way to rolling hills and verdant valleys.
The drive takes you through Kyirong, a small town nestled on the Nepal-Tibet border. Here, you’ll complete the necessary immigration formalities, marking your official return to Nepal. The process offers a glimpse into the cultural and geographical boundary between these two fascinating countries. Stay overnight in a Hotel in Syabru besi.
Leaving behind the breathtaking landscapes of Syabru Bensi, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, you journey towards Kathmandu. The drive from Syabru Bensi unfolds through a tapestry of verdant valleys and cascading rivers. As you descend from the higher altitudes, the air becomes warmer and the landscape transforms.
